As it turns out on the first day of school, Sam the Snail is a little different to the rest of the class. It cannot decide if it is a boy or a girl. Ashamed, it hides in its shell, but it can’t survive all those years in school that way…When it finally peeps out from its hiding place, the teacher, Magda the Capybara, awaits him in the classroom and sends him on a special mission to the forest. There the little snail meets other unusual animals and discovers that there is no single “correct” way of living and creating a family.

Kim jest ślimak Sam? [Who is Sam the Snail?] by Maria M. Pawłowska and Jakub Szamałek, with illustrations by Katarzyna Bogucka, has recently been published in Poland by Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej (Political Critique Publishing House).
