An action and political film inspired by a true story that took place in the autumn of 1981, a few days before the Polish Communist authorities implemented the plan „Synchronization” proclaiming martial law. 10 days before its introduction three young anti-Communist union movement activists managed to withdraw 80 million zlotys from the organization’s Wroclaw bank account. They did so in the last moment before the account was blocked on December 13th. The authorities claimed it to be a bank robbery and went to great lengths to regain the money. The characters are not fanatics but romantic dreamers, who fight against the communist enslavement. With Security Service agents on their trail, a tense cat-and-mouse game unfolds with inspirational drama and surprising twists and turns.

Polish Solidarity. Building the Opposition

with: Krzysztof Niewrzęda, Wacław Sobaszek, hosted by: Igor Stokfiszewski

The topic refers to the long tradition of the Polish opposition using engaged art. The discussion accompanying the film will address the role of literature and performing arts in the Polish democratic transition and their role in the building of the anti-system opposition in the eighties, and today.

This will be a meeting with Polish authors from the circle of the contemporary Polish literature and theater. Invited participants include Krzysztof Niewrzęda, a Polish poet and writer who left Poland shortly before the transformation in 1989. and Waclaw Sobaszek from the Theater Center “Węgajty”, founded in 1986, which was of particular importance in the political context of that time.

Krzysztof Niewrzęda is a poet, novelist and essayist living in Berlin and Szczecin. A finalist of SILESIUS Poetry Award (2011) and Marek Hłaska International Literary Contest (2003). He was nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature (2009) for his novel  Wariant do sprawdzenia (Option to check). He published a collection of essays Czas przeprowadzki (Moving Time), a poetic novel Second Life and a novel Confusion, released this year.

Wacław Sobaszek is the artistic director of the Theater Center “Węgajty”. As a director, actor and musician he has been creating performances in Wegajty for the last 30 years (including among others Vincenz’s Stories, Kalevala, Unwritten Passages, Synczyzna , Water2030, Earth B, Fire, Crisis, Central Station). He was the initiator and organizer of long-term projects: A Different School of Theatre, Theatre Village, “necessary theater”. He is a member of the Cultural Association Borussia.

Igor Stokfiszewski is a literary critic, playwright and member of the Political Critique team. He is the author of Policy Turn (published by Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej, 2009). Stokfiszewski has published extensively in the press, among others in Gazeta Wyborcza, Tygodnik Powszechny, Ha! Art”, FA-art, Notatnik Teatralny and Die Tageszeitung. He co-organized the 7th Berlin Biennale (2012) curated by Artur Zmijewski.

Polish Spring / Polska Wiosna

The project Polish Spring / Polska Wiosna thematically refers to the period of Polish political transformation, a transition significantly influenced by artists. It consists of three events, each of which is dedicated to one aspect crucial for both the Polish art and society, as well as for the broader socio-political arrangements of the world we live in. The transition is thus understood not as a short-term political or economic reform agenda, but as a long-term process which gave rise to new socio-political power dynamics in the contemporary Poland. It is the transformation of the lives of ordinary people that the project focuses on.

The title Polish Spring is inspired by the Polish tradition of socially engaged art, which for centuries acted as a catalyst for social and political change. Poland Spring refers to the events of the past few years in the world, the social discontent expressed not only in the streets. In Poland art has been serving as an expression of social dissatisfaction for a long time.

Art is for us also politics, one of its states of matter. Presentation of works of art and a public exchange on them can provide us with valuable tools and practices for a fundamental social change. It also gives an opportunity to learn more about the Polish society and the experience of transition in general.

Der Film aus dem sensationspolitischen Komödien-Genre ist angelehnt an die authentischen Ereignisse, die sich im Frühling 1981 abspielten, als das PRL-Regie die Vorbereitung zur letzten Etappe abschloss, die zur Verwirklichung der „Gleichschaltung“, also der Einführung des Kriegszustandes führte. 10 Tage vor Einführung des Kriegszustandes zahlte eine Breslauer Bank, durch den damaligen Vorsitzenden der Solidarność in Unterschlesien, drei jungen Funktionären 80 Millionen polnische Zloty vom Konto der berühmten Gewerkschaft aus. Sie taten dies im letzten Moment. Am 13. Dezember wurde das Konto gesperrt. Die Behörden deuteten diesen Vorfall als „Banküberfall“ um und begannen Fieberhaft daran zu arbeiten, dass Geld wieder zu erlagen. Die Helden dieser Erzählung sind keine Fanatiker, sondern romantische Träumer, die gegen die kommunistische Unterdrückung protestieren.

Die polnische Solidarität. Der Aufbau einer Opposition

Das Thema der Veranstaltung knüpft an die lange Tradition der polnischen Opposition innerhalb der engagierten Kunst an. In der Diskussion, die den Film begleiten wird, soll darüber reflektiert werden, welche Rolle die Literatur und szenische Kunst zur Zeit der Wende/Transformation spielte, wie ihre Rolle beim Aufbau einer Opposition in den achtziger Jahren aussah und wie ihre Rolle im gegenwärtigen Moment aussieht. Das Treffen wird mit polnischen Gegenwartsautoren aus den Bereichen Literatur und Theater stattfinden. Zur Diskussion eingeladen sind  Krzysztof Niewrzęda, einem polnischen Dichter und Schriftsteller, der Polen kurz vor der Wende im Jahre 1989 verließ, sowie Wacław Sobaszek aus dem Theaterzentrum „Węgajty“, welches 1986 gegründet wurde und von besonderer Bedeutung im politischen Kontext jener Zeit war.

Krzysztof Niewrzęda – Dichter, Prosaist, Essayist, lebt in Berlin und Stettin. Er erhielt u.a. als Finalist die Dichterauszeichnung SILESIUS (2011), gewann den internationalen Literaturwettbewerb Mark Hłaski (2003), sowie die europäische Literaturauszeichnung (2009) für die Erzählung „Wariant do sprawdzenia“ (Eine Variante zum Überprüfen). Autor eines Sammelbandes von Essays mit dem Titel „Czas przeprowadzki“ (Zeit des Umzugs), der poetischen Erzählung „Second life“ sowie der in diesem Jahr erschienen Erzählung „Zamęt“ (Verwirrung).

Wacław Sobaszek – Künstlerischer Leiter des Theaterzentrums „Węgajty“. Als Regisseur, Schauspieler und Musiker bringt er schon seit über 30 Jahren Inszenierung auf die Bühne (u.a. „Historie Vincenza” – „Die Geschichte Vincenzas“, „Kalevala, fragmenty niepisane” – Kalevala, aufgeschriebene Fragmente“, „Synczyzna” – „Sohnsein“, „Woda2030” – „Wasser2030“, „Ziemia B” – „Erde B“, „Ogień, kryzys, Dworzec Centralny” – „Feuer, Krise, Hauptbahnhof“). Initiator und Leiter langjähriger Veranstaltungen wie: „Die andere Theaterschule“, „Das Theaterdorf“, „Das Theater ist notwendig“. Mitglied der Kulturgemeinschaft „Borussia“.

Igor Stokfiszewski – Literaturkritiker, Dramaturg, Mitglied von „Krytyka Polityczna“. Autor des Buches „Zwort polityczny“ – „Politischer Schwenk“ (Verlag Krytyka Polityczna, 2009). Veröffentlichungen u.a. in „Gazeta Wyborcza“, „Tygodnik Powszechny“, „Ha!art“, „FA-art“, „Notatnik Teatralny“ und „Die Tageszeitung“. Er war Mitglied jener Gruppe, die die 7. Berlin Biennale unter der Leitung von Artur Żmijewski organisierte.
Polnischer Frühling / Polska Wiosna

Das Projekt Polnischer Frühling / Polska Wiosna beschäftigt sich mit der polnischen Wende, oder Transformation wie sie in Polen genannt wird, dem Zeitraum, den Künstler signifikant geprägt haben.Das ganze Projekt besteht aus drei Veranstaltungen: Jede setzt sich mit einem Thema auseinander, das heutzutage eine wichtige Rolle sowohl in der polnischen Kunst als auch in der polnischen Gesellschaft spielt.

Der Titel des Projekts bezieht sich auf die Tradition der polnischen engagierten Kunst, die seit Jahrhunderten als Katalysator für gesellschaftliche und politische Veränderung gedient hat. Gleichzeitig bezieht sich „Polnischer Frühling“ auf die Ereignisse der letzten Jahre, die auf der ganzen Welt eine soziale Unzufriedenheit auf den Straßen zu ausdruckt brachten. In Polen hat Kunst als Protestmittel eine lange Geschichte.

Unserer Meinung nach ist Kunst auch Politik, ein Aggregatzustand davon, der äußerst wertvolle Instrumente und Verfahren bietet und durch einen multikulturellen Austausch zu einer grundlegenden Gesellschaftsveränderung beitragen kann. Die Kunst macht es auch möglich, mehr über die polnische Gesellschaft zu erfahren.
